DDG just turned four. Saying that out loud feels wild, mostly because it also feels like this has been twenty-plus years in the making. Running a creative studio is a lot like raising a kid—you don’t really know what you’re doing at first, you make mistakes, and you figure things out in real time.
I stepped into the creative world at 22. I worked at big agencies, in-house teams, learned the system, learned the rules, and learned what didn’t sit right. Starting our own studio wasn’t some overnight decision—it was built slowly, through exhaustion, trial and error, and a lot of second-guessing. Messy, humbling, and somehow still worth it.
I remember writing in grad school that one day I’d open a creative agency in my own neighborhood. Fast forward 25 years, and here we are. What I’ve learned is that building a business takes more than ambition. It takes patience, reflection, and a real commitment to staying curious.
At DDG, our rule is simple: people over profit. Always.
Our clients, collaborators, and community aren’t add-ons—they’re the reason the studio exists. Relationships come first. We invest time, trust, and care because that’s what actually builds something sustainable.
We tell our team to get uncomfortable. Go meet people. Talk to folks outside your circle. Build your tribe. It sounds obvious, but it’s survival. Every awkward meeting, every pitch that doesn’t land, every project that falls apart teaches you something. We call it failing forward. The key is not stopping. Keep moving. Keep learning. Keep building.
We’ve learned to stick to what we’re good at. At our core, DDG is made up of educators, storytellers, and doers. We show up. We follow through. And over time, that consistency builds trust.
Your story matters. Not just the work you make, but how you approach it. Your values. Your voice. Your point of view. When those things are clear, decision-making gets easier, and the work starts to align.
Yes, we design logos, websites, and event collateral. But just as important, we give our time and attention. Sometimes that effort doesn’t pay off right away—and that’s okay. Mentoring, collaborating, and giving back always cmes back around in ways you don’t expect.
A few things we’ve learned along the way:
People over profit. Every time.
Failing forward is still forward.
Show up. Reliability builds reputation.
Do what you’re good at—and do it well.
Invest time, even when there’s no immediate return.
Running a studio isn’t about the highlight reel. It’s about grit. Showing up on the days when it’s quiet, when it’s hard, and when you’re unsure. If you have the right people around you, stay open to learning, and aren’t afraid to fail, the rest starts to fall into place.
We’re still early in the story. Next up is our immersive community workshop series—connecting emerging artists with industry professionals through collaboration, creativity, and shared learning. This is what DDG has always been about.
We’re just getting started.
